Idea, replace tinkertoy connector with two large rubber washers, two
large steel washers, a bolt and a couple of nuts.  Put the struts between
the rubber washers, put the steel washers on the outside, drop the bolt
down the middle and crank it tight.  Use eyebolt if worried about tensile
strength.
